Commentary from Vikki Slade

FIRST PLACE – Ivy Chimneys Primary School, Epping, Essex

I selected this school as I know it will have been dealing with some really distressing issues as the site of the asylum hotel protests over the summer. I can only imagine the tension within some families, and the risks that children from marginalised communities may face. This underlines the importance of the kindness that is woven into Hamish & Milo, and the nurturing it can provide for the children, the staff, and the wider school community.

SECOND PLACE – St Martins School, Oswestry, Shropshire

Having to return to online school for a month will have created additional work for staff, pressure for families, and disruption and distress for the children. It would be great to give this school community a boost. The financial situation caused by the fire may have precluded the school from being able to buy into the programme, and the person nominating the school clearly has experience of the benefit Hamish & Milo can bring.

THIRD PLACE – Rose Hill Primary School, Stockport

I was pleased to award Rose Hill one of the packages because I felt the value of this award would spread across the area through its work within the SEND network. Having visited the school website and watched their video, I sensed the positivity and love within the school, and I am confident that providing Hamish & Milo in this setting will allow the good work to ripple beyond.

FOURTH PLACE – Scargill CofE Primary School, Ilkeston, Derbyshire

I loved the way the school has already found ways to demonstrate the importance of mental health through its physical surroundings, and it was great to read about the inclusive way the person nominating the school described their child’s experience. I also took a look at the website and was struck by the importance of the STARFISH values. This reinforced my view that this school was a worthy winner of one of the prizes.

FIFTH PLACE – Legsby Primary School, Market Rasen,

I selected this school because of the difference it had made to the family who made the nomination. For such a small school to be able to roll out Hamish & Milo would make a difference to the whole community.
