Hamish & Milo Pathfinder Foundation PSED Indicator
Pathfinder is a strengths-based identification and impact measurement tool for the Hamish & Milo Foundation Programme.
Pathfinder has two key purposes. Firstly, it provides a clear baseline of a child’s current stage of social and emotional development, helping practitioners identify individual strengths alongside priority areas for PSED development. This information can then be used as a focus of support through the Hamish & Milo Foundation programme.
Secondly, Pathfinder acts as an impact measurement tool. By completing it before and after the programme, practitioners can identify and evidence changes in a child’s social and emotional skills over time, demonstrating progress and the impact of the programme.
Hamish & Milo Foundation is carefully aligned to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).
Hamish & Milo Emotional Literacy Pathway
The EYFS framework recognises that children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) is fundamental to their development and is shaped through strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults.
The Hamish & Milo Emotional Literacy Pathway reflects how social and emotional skills develop progressively through relational experiences.
Within Hamish & Milo Foundation, the PSED focus areas of Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Managing Self and Building Relationships support children to understand feelings, regulate emotions and behaviour, develop confidence and independence, and build positive relationships with adults and peers. Together, these interconnected skills help children build their Rainbow of Resilience.

Schools using Hamish & Milo Navigator can record children’s data from Pathfinder alongside their other Hamish & Milo intervention data, bringing PSED progress and impact reporting into one place.
Pathfinder scores can be captured pre- and post-programme alongside child demographic and contextual information, helping schools monitor individual progress, explore patterns across groups and evidence the impact of Hamish & Milo Foundation over time.
