Hamish & Milo’s range of evidence-based social and emotional development and social, emotional, and mental health programmes are proven to help primary children experiencing adversity, SEMH, or SEND difficulties.
In collaboration with the University of Bath, and over two years of qualitative data of 1700 children, we can demonstrate the impact of our range of SEL and SEMH intervention programmes.
Improve child outcomes
Positively impact wellbeing, behaviour, attendance and learning
The research demonstrated how Hamish & Milo schools are seeing real change in children’s peer relationships, emotional regulation, self-confidence and social and emotional literacy skills. There is a significant positive influence on educational engagement and reduction of emotional school-based avoidance, anxiety and challenging behaviours.
A recent quasi-experimental mixed-methods research study¹ on the effectiveness of Hamish & Milo demonstrated that after taking part in the programme the following significant positive outcomes were reported by school staff, children and parents.
¹ Participants include 92 schools and over 1700 children. November 2024.
Positive outcomes reported by school staff, children and parents
The children “found their voice.”
Their self-esteem and confidence increased so they could more easily share their feelings and experiences and ask for help and support when they needed it.

Children’s social and emotional skills improved.
Their self-awareness, resilience, and self-regulation increased so they were able to experience more empathy and build stronger, long-lasting social connections.

Children’s wellbeing improved.
They were happier, calmer, more positive and were thriving.

Children’s academic learning improved.
They developed a more positive attitude towards learning and became more independent, and these results were reflected in the classroom.

Parents noticed the changes in their children.
Parents reported the positive impacts they were seeing at home.

School leaders noticed a decrease in escalations and exclusions.
A decrease of dysregulated behaviour and a reduction in exclusions was experienced.

The impact was felt school-wide.
The positive impact for pupils and staff was noticed across the school.

The study showed that the Hamish & Milo Programme is effective in supporting
Vulnerable children from disadvantaged backgrounds experiencing adversity.

Children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) difficulties.

Children with special educational needs and disabilities.

prioritise wellbeing
Wellbeing programmes to help primary-aged children thrive
Our comprehensive emotions curriculum, and range of SEMH intervention programmes explore self-esteem and resilience, grief, loss and sadness, explosive feelings, anxiety, peer relationships and conflict, diversity and inclusion, change and transition – all complex issues that we know affect children’s long-term mental health.
We provide the framework, language, and content for courageous conversations with children about mental health, emotions and life experiences. Our programmes help children develop social and emotional literacy skills, become more self-confident and resilient, less anxious, and more able to self-regulate to engage in learning and fulfil their potential. Families Together is a series of workshops for parents, carers and family members that link directly to our in-school programmes to help families support the wellbeing of their children collaboratively alongside school.
Versatile even for less-experienced staff Hamish & Milo is used in 1-2-1, small group intervention and whole classes across the primary ‘stage’ range. The programmes provide opportunities for children to explore situations and experiences that happen in their lives and the complexity of feelings that impact emotional health in weekly sessions consisting of activities and discussion over a 10 week period or a term.
