Expedition Sessions – Training for each emotion theme
Expedition Sessions are in-depth professional development sessions exploring each Hamish & Milo emotion theme in greater detail.
Designed for pastoral staff, mental health champions and SEMH practitioners, the sessions deepen understanding of the emotional themes, therapeutic approach, psychoeducation and practical delivery of each intervention programme. Each session combines theory, relational practice and practical implementation support to help staff deliver SEMH provision with greater confidence, insight and impact.
Each Expedition Session explores:
Actions, words and me (Conflict)
Explore the impact of conflict, communication breakdown and relational difficulties on children’s emotional wellbeing. Against a backdrop of increasing social challenges and relationship breakdown, children need support to communicate feelings safely, listen to others and navigate disagreements in healthy ways. This session explores emotional literacy, repair, empathy and the importance of helping children feel heard, valued and connected within their relationships.
Celebrating me (Diversity & Inclusion)
Explore diversity, identity, belonging and the emotional impact of stereotyping, exclusion or discrimination. This session helps practitioners support children to celebrate difference, develop empathy and understand their own identity within an increasingly diverse and complex world. It also explores how children can develop confidence, respect and a stronger sense of belonging within relationships and communities.
Resilient me (Resilience)
Explore resilience, emotional strength and the role of trusted relationships in helping children navigate challenge and adversity. This session examines how resilience develops through connection, encouragement and emotionally safe experiences, while supporting practitioners to help children build confidence, self-belief, coping strategies and a stronger sense of capability in themselves and the world around them.
Calm me (Anxiety)
Explore childhood anxiety, emotional regulation and the increasing pressures affecting children’s mental health and wellbeing. This session supports practitioners to recognise signs of anxiety, understand how it can present in different ways and help children develop strategies to regulate, express and manage difficult feelings safely. The role of emotionally available adults and relational safety is explored throughout.
Finding me (Sadness)
Explore sadness, low mood and emotionally difficult experiences that may affect children’s wellbeing, confidence and engagement in school life. This session supports practitioners to help children recognise, express and make sense of difficult feelings while understanding some of the wider experiences that may contribute to emotional distress. The importance of emotionally safe, trusting relationships is central throughout.
New beginnings and me (Change and transition)
Examine change, transition and uncertainty, and the emotional impact these experiences can have on children’s wellbeing and sense of security. This session explores how children experience endings and new beginnings, alongside practical ways to help them process emotions, manage uncertainty and approach change with greater confidence, resilience and emotional understanding.
Memories and me (Loss, grief and bereavement)
Examine grief, bereavement and the many forms of loss children may experience throughout childhood, including family separation, change and disrupted relationships. This session explores the emotional impact loss can have on children’s wellbeing and behaviour, alongside ways practitioners can provide sensitive, relational support that helps children process feelings, strengthen connection and feel emotionally contained.
Amazing me (Self-esteem, self-worth and confidence)
Examine the development of self-esteem, self-worth and identity, and the impact these have on children’s emotional wellbeing, confidence and relationships. The session explores how early experiences, relationships and internal beliefs shape the way children see themselves, alongside practical ways to help children recognise strengths, develop self-belief and feel valued for who they are.
My friends and me (Friendships)
Explore friendship, belonging and the importance of healthy peer relationships in children’s emotional development and wellbeing. This session examines the emotional impact of feeling excluded, misunderstood or disconnected, while helping practitioners support children to communicate openly, repair relationships, navigate conflict and develop positive, trusting friendships.
Exploding me (Angry feelings)
Examine strong emotions, dysregulation and the underlying needs that can sit beneath angry behaviour. This session explores how anger can develop, how emotional overwhelm may present in children and the importance of relational, attuned responses from adults. Practitioners will explore strategies that help children recognise triggers, regulate safely and express feelings in healthier ways.

About the programme author and lead facilitator
Clare Williams, MA, B.Ed Hons
Clare is a primary teacher, educational psychotherapist, educational consultant, trainer and supervisor. Her work in the field of children’s mental health and education is driven by her desire to advocate and inspire schools and pastoral teams to prioritise children’s wellbeing and to offer them the life chances that enable them to thrive within a complex and ever-changing world.
“My philosophy centres on enabling children to develop a belief in themselves through the quality of relationships they experience that build the fundamental necessity of trust at the core. It is through this quality of relational engagement that children can feel safe enough to learn about the world, themselves and to engage in the learning environment.”
